SAN TRANCECISCO |
| |

The opener on the San TRANCEcisco comp which is a
presentation of the "Bay Area's Underground Trance
Movement" isn't what I expected. I was under the
impression I was entering the world of psy trance but
I have a hard time labeling The Doramey Fossillotti's
"Beyonddananda (featuring SMP)" as trance. Which
isn't to say it's not good. Chilled beats fuse
beautifully with etherea in what is a lovely piece of
psy downtempo. "Design Possibilities" by Random
however
moves into the realm of goa-psy and leaves me to
assume
that track one was an intro. Guess I spoke too soon,
huh? Doesn't matter. The first track was great, and so
is "Design Possibilities," a teflon-slick dart of
sleek acid
textures. Sea Creatures' "Bumper Boats" has as its
backbone the traditional low goa melody line with some
nicer higher textures woven in for completion of a
groovy track. "Alien Antics" by Enigma Machine hauls
in some even deeper
darkness for . "Suicide" by Dirtyhertz
is profoundly progressive and more subtle while "After
Party" by Sanyama returns to the styles of previous
tracks. "Transient Node" by Helios is chemically
psychedelic. A lighter feel, as though heading for
liftoff, bejewels "Sacarab" track by The Loomii.
EKKO's "The Wizard" slowly progresses to lively
personality and Vaporware's "Callisto" boasts buzzy
textures that make it one of the more unique tracks on
the disc, which closes with the semi-minimalism of
Etienne's "We Come in Peace." This is a strong set of
psy tracks and certainly proves the Bay Area
underground worthy of further exploration. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
