MAGNETOPHONE - THE MAN WHO ATE THE MAN (4AD)
 
Will you like Magnetophone if you buy them? Hard to say. Highly melodic, lush, a bit eclectic, a tad esoteric, not all-out experimental but a rather shy of conventional, pretty but moody, dark but not sinister. Does that help? Sorry, but this band doesn't lend itself to here's-a-batch-of-nifty-quotes-about-the-band comments that will immediately tell you whether or not it's worth checking out. It's not electronic dance, so if that's what you want, look away. Actually, I'd come closer to recommending this batch of electronica-based songs to a fan of alternative, more especially consumers of shoegazer, as the overall mood of "The Man Who Ate the Man" is similar, even if this is less rock-based and more rooted in electronic composition. The music is ultra thick with that melodiousness and certainly lends itself to close-eyed consideration. There's plenty of melancholia injected into the proceedings, too, so depending on what you listen to when you get depressed. Or ... -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
