BECK "GUEROLITO" (INTERSCOPE)

Beck is almost always hooky and catchy for me, always entertaining on some level. In all fairness, he's even entertaining on some level on "Guerolito," a remix companion to Guero. Unfortunately, that level is farther down than the normal groovy pull of most Beck music. Of course, every Beck album is different than the last and this mixer-upper is no different. But this time I feel myself unable to really submerse in the music. There's a lethargy about the proceedings that leave me a little lukewarm. See? It doesn't leave me cold because it doesn't suck. It just doesn't rock, either. Beck has had stoned-down songs in his repertoire before but they were always part of a whole, one track among many, a dynamic shift, something for which Beck has talent. But this is just one bland-by-comparison-to-his-other-stuff-I've-heard batch of tracks, with "Gettochip Malfunction [Hell Yes]" being the shiniest bit of hope. Now, I haven't heard Beck's original "Guero" to compare what's going on here. And it must be acknowledged that this is a remix album and those are always birds of a different feather. It must also be said that I can't say that with repeated listenings I might find the ebb and flow of these songs and be able to sink into them. But they just don't have that out-of-the-gate Beck hook.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
