URSULA 1000 - HERE COMES TOMORROW (ESL MUSIC)

The eclecticism on display on Ursula 1000's third studio album, "Here Comes Tomorrow" gives the listener a bit of a journey, making the rounds through a variety of influences. Funked out disco house can be found on multiple tracks ("Kaboom!" or "Descarga en la Discoteca," for example) and retro 80s flavors are addressed in such tracks as "Hello! Let's Go to a Disco" and "Electrik Boogie." If you want to get steamy with some Latin houseyness, check out "Got Cha," or if you'd rather trip to some exotic psychedelica, go to "Mirkin the Mystic." Dub/reggae flavors with a touch of 60s psychedelic electric organ make an appearance on "Two Tone Rocka." Bossa nova? "Arrastao." As you can see, "Ursula 1000" winds its way through a number of styles, often fusing multiple influences into one piece. Overall, it's a solid performance from beginning to end, sometimes with a dash of Scissor Sisters-esque flamboyance. The only flaw to the CD is its occasional inclination to drift into a tinge of smarmyness, but otherwise it's a fairly catchy piece. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
