WILLIAM ORBIT - HELLO WAVEFORMS (SANCTUARY)

William Orbit's embracive yet alien, playful yet melancholic (if obliquely so) ambient electronic is ALWAYS a treat. There's a lot of ambient music out there but not nearly all of it is as distinctive as the work of Orbit, whose music is instantly identifiable as stemming from the mind of this particular artist. Lush but not heavy, the ambient flow that backs the melody is, if audio could be transferred to picture, the expansive view above the clouds, with infinite blue emptiness surrounding you as you drift above eternal cotton textures. The gentle pulsings of Orbit's melodies greet you like alive little lights reaching out with a quiet energy that seduces and begs to be played with but also finds its way to your emotions. Truly, Orbit's music must be amongst the best in the world of ambient/chillout music, alive with its own personality but also giving to you what you bring to the table. Definitely instrospectively interactive. Artist meets listener. With subtley progressive tracks like the opener "Sea Green," which conjures thoughts of an ocean of bliss, or the gentle propulsion of "Surfin'" - reminiscent of Thomas Newman's work - how can you go wrong. Or you might dig "Bubble Universe," a transcendent piece that hints at experimental but also employs lush vocals in what is an effervescent piece. Or you could enjoy the aural colors herein with album closer "Colours from Nowhere," a mellow but curious kitten at play with its motions translated to electronic ambience. Sublime. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
