COMPOST BLACK LABEL SERIES VOL. 1 (COMPOST) |

Review an album like volume one of the Compost Black Label Series and you're
standing in the shadow of giants. The offshoot of Germany's Compost label
has been winning raves from some of the world's most well-respected DJs.
People like French techno legend Laurent Garnier ("Strong as hell"), LCD
Soundsystem's James Murphy ("Genius. Seriously."), Montreal electro-house
kingpin Tiga ("Cool.") and Peter Kruder, of Kruder & Dorfmeister fame,
("Cooles Teil!"). If my paltry recommendation is still necessary, well,
heck, if you're A DJ into deep, well-produced minimal electro-tinged techno
and house, get this unmixed CD. The name I've most been woken up to herein
is that of Germany's Matt Flores, particularly his Metrosexual remix of
Flowerz's "All Tonight." A piano key line kicks the track off, which rolls
along on a snapping kick-beat and throws in melodic "ooh" and a "oh,
tonight" vocal stab ˆ the track is lush, eventually getting taking on a
rubbery techno edge. Love it. Flores pops up again on a collaboration with
Tyree Cooper on "Close Life Off," which melds melancholy strings, pulsating
synths, clattering percussion and disco bass line and vocal - magic.
Googling Flores's name will take likely direct you to his home on
Combination Records ˆ you will happily get lost there (great stuff - I've an
order pending). Opting for a fatter disco-fied bass line and chunked out
break beat is Syrup on "51 Cents Left" and Tricksi bottoms things out nicely
with some big bass hits, cymbals, rimshots and cowbells on "Hormony." Lopazz
delivers a couple tunes ("Destiny" and "Estrella") and the rest of the
compilation is rounded out with tracks by Minus 8, Julius Kammerl (with the
caustic feedback hell-tastic "Erlangen Sud"), Martin Peter, Phreek Plus One,
Brahmsonic and the Latin minimalism and reverberating melody of Keisuke Suzuki
on "Water Samba." Compost has done a very nice thing in putting these
singles together in one convenient package, but I'll likely end up picking
up Black Label Series as singles from here on out - I'm too impatient to
