ALIAS & TARSIER - BROOKLYN/OAKLYN (ANT ICON)

If you like what Alias and Tarsier do on any given track, you should be pleased with the whole effort. The music touches on darkwave sensibilities, to a degree, and is extremely atmospheric and moody, and quite emotive. It is also startlingly energetic in spots. Example: The third track, "Last Nail," which abruptly shifts from the slow-mo skittering downbeat percussion and melancholic ethereal melodies into a hip-hop burst, though the downtempo elements continue beneath the speedy spoken word. Creativity doesn't seem to be lacking here. This is the sort of thing you listen to under a set of those big Princess Leia ear-bun headphones. An overall mood prevails, even when A&T left-turn on you and present something unexpected (which also garners kudos for the composers). Organic music (such as an acoustic guitar) sneaks its way into the proceedings occasionally, making for another style shift. Even when a bit spacious and minimal, A&T conjure strong textural quality. If you want some soothingly sad tunage with quirky mix ups tossed in here and there, check these guys out. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
