It helps tremendously to understand the background to The Crystal Method's "Drive: Nike + Original Run" to grasp what these electronic artists are trying to accomplish. This album is a bit unique in intent and even the artists themselves will tell you that a different creative process was invovled in this album due to the nature of the beast. See, this is sports related. Interesting, huh? Here's the deal: This album is finding its release via the Sport Music section of the music store at Apple iTunes and there's a very good reason for this. The Crystal Method crafted this album to function as a soundtrack for working out. The music has an arc of warm-up, peak, cool-down to assist athletes as they work their bodies to stay in shape. Electronc dance music has always been body-related, really, and so this seems a natural relationship, dance music and working out. The trademark buzzing textures and hooky beats one expects from The Crystal Method are here as the group leads athletes (and us casual listeners) through a progressive audio workout that builds to an energetic peak that flows with energy until pulling back and winding the listener back down. TCM has presented variety with the songs (you don't want someone getting bored while working out ... something's gotta occupy the mind while the body's busy, right?) and again shows off their talent, though I don't think this is their best work or even a standout in the electronic scene in general. But while it's not great, it is good and, hey, they even did a mix of The Doors "Roadhouse Blues," which you should check out. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
