It would be fair to assert that Farina's 2-disc "Sessions" effort for Ministry of Sound is repetitive and spartan. As for the repetition, that same accusation can also fly at a lot of house music. But it isn't necessarily a bad thing in every case and the spartan, minimalist aspects of this mix of tracks works its paradoxical magic by making a little accomplish a lot. At least a fair amount. The lean, bare beats and textures of "Sessions" conjure a palpable atmosphere, which is where the music finds its strength. Take that, couple it with the energy and pulse of the music and the fact that those minimalist layers weave together effectively and you have a solid, if not exactly stellar, album. And some of that is taste. House freaks will likely be compelled by the tunes and there's no reason they shouldn't be. In addition, there's an overall progressive effect, an energy build evident in the layering that serves to make a whole work out of this, lifting it above a mere
