NURSE WITH WOUND - ROCK N ROLL STATION (BETA-LACTAM RING RECORDS)

(Ed. Note: This review refers to the 2006 remaster release of the original 1994 album.) "Rock'n Roll Station" from Nurse with Wound really ought to get your attention. It isn't the most exciting or absorbing piece of experimental I've come across but it is interesting. Nurse with Wound fuses spoken word, samples, maniuplated noise and odd percussion in various degrees, flowing from one motif to another, maintaining throughout a shadowy ambience. Skeletal beats segue into small ruptures of static to curious wordsmithing to ... well, more strangeness. It isn't as compelling as some more purely ambient experimental stylings, which can often be infused with the siren song itself, but "Rock'N Roll Station" is a smartly done slice of gourmet listening with its varied pieces Frankensteined together into a smooth flowing dose of weirdness. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
