TRICKY BIZZNISS FT. TRIXIE REISS (EsNtion Records)

You'll think as soon as the opening track begins playing in your ear that you've fallen into a timewarp into the 80s. The album introduces itself with a midtempo slice of very retro synthpop that just oozes the personality of the Decade of Decadence (which, personally, I miss very much, sad to say). Lush electronic instrumentals, fuzzy beats, dense melodies and clean vocals mixed with those 80s robovocals makes for quite a cool listen. Of course, a lot of listeners will be put off by a sound so drenched in an era long ago written off as hoky by many, but no fear. The music doesn't limit itself to this sort of thing. While maintaining the same lush, full, pretty sound, the tunes also embraces elements of modern pop as well, spanning a bridge between the now and the then, both times in which electronic beats and melody thrive(d). Of course, the proceedings are awfully bubblegum, it's pop done well and while it may not be terribly original, it's quite listenable. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
