SHAPE UK - SOUND ADVICE (ULTRA)

After a lackluster kick-off with the opening track "You Never Know", Shape: UK (the debut album from the UK band Shapeshifters - the duo has to release in the US under Shape UK because there is a hip hop act trademarked with their original name) gets things rolling nicely with a platter-full of disco-house tracks that are equal parts postmodern dance and blast from the past. (By the way, the politics of "You Never Know has nothing to do with my lack of appreciation; the song just doesn't hit.) Heady, high energy disco drives this disc from track two "Sensitivity" on with most of the numbers being fast-paced numbers (like a 5 minute vocal version of "Lola's Theme" the #1 UK single when it was an instrumental in 2004, and their other UK chart hits like "Back To Basics") with a little slow tossed in here and there for good measure. The music is catchy and really captures the flavor of disco. The mix of old and new varies from track to track, with some songs just screaming 70s while others manifest as contemporary house doused in disco influences. The main shortcoming of the disc is that, despite its energy and hook, the album can't maintain listener interest for the duration of the entire CD. Still, with disco-house this lush, it's hard to be too critical. www.myspace.com/theshapeshifters-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
