LAURENT GARNIER - RETROSPECTIVE 1994-2006 (MUTE) |
| |

I know Laurent Garnier is a big deal in the world of electronic music but I just never really got into this. I feel a little bad. Here's one of the big names in the dance industry and here's a retrospective covering his whole career and it just doesn't do much for me. Of coure, different strokes for different folks. And, of course, I never said this was bad. It's a fairly eclectic batch of tracks, ranging from chillout to house flavors and much in between. On one hand, that's a good thing and it demonstrates that Garnier's scope is broad. On the other hand, a more streamlined sound might have brough more hook to this release. Of course, as a retrospective, you have to represent the artist's career and if the artist's repertoire is varied, then so will the retrospective be. Though I do wonder if they couldn't have made a more stylistically even sorting of tracks among two discs. Make one disc the pacier, more dancey and energetic collection while the other tackles some of the other stuff. Or, it could be Garnier just isn't the artist to grab my attention. It's a decent collection and others will cherish it more than I.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
