I’ve long been a fan of the Putumayo series of compilation CDs, and their latest, “A New Groove,” is no exception. Emo starts out the offering, and I’m not all that into their distinctive vocal sound, but with Bitter:Sweet and “Dirty Laundry” I’m feeling the worldwide vibe. Each track has its country of origin noted, and I think technically this collection falls under “world” music, but it ranges from the lovely reggae down-tempo horns of The Cat Empire (rather surprisingly from Australia of all places) to the funky UK what sounds like warbling electronic organs and retro drum lines setting off the jazzy vocals of Alice Russell. Tracks that really get me grooving are the swinging K-Os “Crabbuckit” which will have you tapping your foot with its clapping catchiness, not to mention the sultry smoky vocals of “L.I.N.N.” in a tempting trip hop jazz jaunt. “The Hop” is another sexy slightly more beat driven but still mellow vibe, you could slow dance grind to this one no problem. With the familiar strains of “Everything” (even if you’ve never heard this island-infused tune, and then closing on a ‘rewound’ version of a Thievery Corporation track by Kid Loco, this entire unmixed collection has that comfortable feel like a pair of favorite jeans that fit just right.-- review by Claire Maxwell
