MOCHIPET - DISKO DONKEY (DALY CITY)

Imagine a popcheese goofy Nine Inch Nails shredded through a filter of glitch, electroj, synthpop, Nintendo music, and a little bit of organica and you'll sort of have an idea of this - as much of an idea of "Disko Donkey" as you're apt to get without actually hearing it, that is. At first the CD is rather eyebrow raising with its deadpan exploration of a man whose girlfriend suddenly becomes a robot and feasts on antivirus for breakfast and such. But then it's on to the pumped weird techno of "Woodie Guthrie" and the listener begins to find himself inexplicably absorbed in the oddity that is Mochipet. Such low brow techno elements reminiscent of video game flavors mixed into tight textures and moving unassumingly but with solid energy! This is a unique experience and as goofy and Nintendo-esque as some of the core elements may be (though not, admittedly, all of them), Mochipet does a fine job of creating some pretty compelling and driving electronica, a sort of industrio-dance-glitch thingy. Or something. At any rate, this is original to be sure. Not for all tastes but if you're a bit adventurous you might just get a kick out of this and even find yourself jamming to it. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
