WORLD PSYCHEDELIC CLASSICS 3: LOVE'S A REAL THING (LUAKA BOP)

“World Psychedelic Classics 3: Love’s a Real Thing - The Funky Fuzzy Sounds of West Africa” is a real treat and something special, for sure. Digging into the musical culture of West Africa in the 1970s you find a hybridization afoot. Deeply rooted tribal sounds inform and run through the marrow of a growing pop music culture influenced by the psychedelic rock of the era. The end result is music such as is presented on this disc. Blending world rhythms and strong Afrobeat sensibilities with the fuzz guitar, soulful 60s organs, energetic brass and largely non-English vocals that give a real exotic feel to what is already a very organic world music experience, these songs are a unique peek at a lively musical presence. The music is both familiar - thanks to the heavy reliance on the western world’s psyche rock - and ripe with foreign fascination - thanks to the equally heavy reliance on the African roots in primitive, percussive tribal sounds. A mesmerizing and enjoyable set of world tunes with a flavor both unique and accessible. Highly recommended. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
