CLUB AND HOME ENTERTAINMENT VOL. 3 (MORRIS AUDIO) |
| |

Here's a case in which minimalism (mostly) works. Some dance music can be just too dull and repetitive without a cornucopia of elements, but sometimes bare bones works just fine. In this case, given that there's a certain old school element informing the proceedings, the starkness serves to up the personality and atmosphere of what's going on. Rather than the minimalism sounding hollow or repetitive, the works herein use empty space wisely (sort of an audio form of the wise visual artist whose empty spaces are a deliberate and successful part of his image). This comp CD, the third in this series from Morris Audio, boasts a number of tracks that are both simple and quirky. It's a tad esoteric artistically but that works just fine. While this music has some quirk to it, it's not going to alienate unadventurous listeners as much as something more outright experimental would. This is just good, lean techno and house. The more you listen the more you're pulled in to the happy shadows with these tracks. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
