THRIVEMIX PRESENTS ELECTRO MIXED BY JOHNNY VICIOUS (THRIVE DANCE) |
| |

“I do not like electro.” I felt it was only fair to start out my review – my FOUR AND A HALF STAR review- of a CD entitled “ThriveMix presents Electro” with that quote. I admit it’s come out of my mouth on more than one occasion. Now, however... is this what electro sounds like now? I’ve been missing out!? Fun danceable funky remixes of... Bloc Party? (“Banquet” is the opening track on CD one and pulled me in instantly.) Depeche Mode? iio? Basement Jaxx? If you had been playing this at your last party and asked me to guess the title, I never would have hit it. Scissor Sisters sound more like some tweaked out Bee Gees disco (I love disco). There might be some has some more of the standard Electro artists and remixers on this expansive 2 CD set (I’m guessing Justice vs Simian, my least favorite of the 24), expertly mixed by Johnny Vicious, but what’s important here is not to try to stuff this into a is it still trendy or not genre. Listen. Its fun! Even when it gets into the more monotone vocoder type electro is known for, take Tiga, it quickly pops back into, well, more pop, like Stefy’s sultry teen-esque breathy lyrics. I would hazard to say that for the most part this is a very mainstream, pool-party, radio-friendly, easily digestible version of electro. Which is to say I really really like it (and the move away from the bikini girls cover art of prior thrivemix releases), and I imagine a lot of you will too. -- review by Claire Maxwell
