MIGHTYREAL: SHOWSTOPPERS 1980-1988 (CANDY STORE RECORDS) |
| |

This is, indeed, a mighty dance floor retrospective. Spanning 15 CDs, this look back at dance music's roots encompasses late disco and post-disco offerings from straight-up disco to hooky new wave dance music to proto-house and more. Disco was declared dead a long time ago but some of the sleek floorshakers on here prove that that's maybe not so true. And 80s flavored electronic dance pop is far from in-the-grave, as well. In fact, the new wave stuff is the best of the batch on this retrospective. And die-hard house listeners will appreciate a look at the early stages of contemporary dance flavors. The past can teach us much and "Showstoppers" is a helluva lot of evidence for that assertion and a worthy listen for fans with retro tastes. Best of all, the 15 discs are organized according to style so the listener can pick and choose which classic styles he or she wishes to explore. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
