DUBFIRE - TAIPEI GU31 (GLOBAL UNDERGROUND)

Though "Taipei" - a release from Deep Dish member Dubfire - falls short of greatness - it's still a pretty good showing. If you find the first disc not quite thrilling, the second disc should grab your attention. CD 1 is a decent warmup for this double-disc album, but mostly it is just a warmup. It's good but not exciting, though it is packed with some nice textures and shows forth with a modicum of eclecticism. There are definitely some house roots here but the music reaches out beyond that genre's tradition and elevates itself above the bulk of house's offerings (I've always felt house was overrated, to be perfectly honest). But CD 2 is where things really kick in - bright aural colors, even more hooky textures and a nice sense of drive - not to mention enough melody to fend off mediocrity. While "Taipei" isn't exactly inspired, it's still a go-getter. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
