Sure, while Ultra Rock may be the avenue to rock for fans of dance and the way to get rockers to listen to dance, it still comes across as a bit gimmicky. Take a bunch of rock artists (a bunch I'm not familiar with and a few I am quite aware of) and their songs and put 'em through the electronica mixer. Out pops two CDs of dance rock. Panic! At The Disco, Good Charlotte, Fall Out Boy, P.O.D., Kill Hannah and more are represented here. A few of these names have meaning for me (in that I basically know who they are or, in some cases, have heard a good dose of their music). Many do not. The problem with a release like this is that it does, to a certain degree, hinge on novelty. And if you aren't familiar with or aren't a fan of the songs on tap, then the music starts to lose its appeal. What you end up with is club music with guitars, in several cases. Of course, in all fairness, let's not neglect the art of remixing. Some of these songs seem to be quite different than their originals, and that is one of the artistic expressions of the remixer. But in the end, while I'm sure dance floors will be more than passingly familiar with some of these tracks before all is said and done, I'm just not that impressed. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
