Long Island native Theo Pisani, a.k.a. DJ Theo, is a radio jock on Party 105.3 FM [a top U.S. dance music radio station reaching 1.2 million people in the New York Tri-State area.] In his latest release, the initial listen of the first few measures of his 127 to 130 bpm, 72-minute club mix, Summer Clubbing Volume 1, were very deceiving. It almost sounded like one of those meditation tapes you’d hear from the eighties – birds chirping, waves crashing, and synth strings. I had to do double-take to see what I was listening to and make sure it was the right CD – when - pow! - a phatt electro-synth bassline slammed in with contrasting smooth male vocals and an eighties-style melody – “Shining Star” was in full gear! The mix into track two was rough. Being a stickler for musicality, the bassline of "Let's Work" musically conflicted with the outro to “Shining Star”. But once the track mixing was officially over, the funkiness took over. Up next, was one of the first stand-outs, "Tell Me" by Sumantri featuring Plural; it's deep, chunky, and melodic. Then it's back to funky fun electro with "We Play House". With a little less electro, "Wheels In Motion" stews with some subtle disco flavor. Moving onto "Strings of Tortuga", portions of the track were repetitious and dropped down a bit in energy. Thankfully, bringing the energy back up again is a remake of Olive’s “You’re Not Alone” by Dino Lenny featuring Jennifer Rene – a driving remix by Theo himself. Unfortunately it was followed up with "I Need Someone" which took annoying repetition to a new high. When "My Destiny" by Kim English came in, it was a very welcome change with its solid groove and Kim's strong vocals. Gaining momentum, "Time", by Jen Carbonella, brings in an uplifting progressive vibe with attention-grabbing sounds weaving in and out throughout the track. Next, is more attention-grabbing with a Gabriel & Dresden remix of "Replay the Night" that keeps the driving groove pushing forward. Subtle hints of Eugena 2000 make their way into "Summerfish" and then "Beat Like This" brings it on back to electro. Wrapping things up is the chunky, pumping, erie, laughter-filled, Richie Santana & Peter Bailey Remix of Josh Wink's classic "Don't Laugh". With a variety of styles from standard house to funk to electro, DJ Theo's track selection wraps variety into a shake-your-money-maker mix.
