PUTUMAYO PRESENTS LATIN LOUNGE (PUTUMAYO)

Here's a cool dose of Latin-based chillout music that mingles classic world flavors with modern sensibilities, the organic with the electronic. Alacran's "Reflejo de Luna" offers an intriguing blend of South America and Italian with its Italy-Argentina buddy-up. Cuba's Roberto Poveda offers the chilled dance grooves and horns of "Sueno Mama." Spain gives us Bebe and "Siempre Me Quedara," a track that manages to be both sexy and innocent. Sidestepper (UK/Columbia) delivers "Dame Tu Querer," a quiet but assertive and atmospheric Euro-South American mingling. Si*Se combines the USA and the Dominican Republic to present to listeners the pop-friendly "Mariposa (en Havana)." Brazil and Luiz de Aquino share "Caminhos de Cuba," a soft-spoken but dancing like a candle flame batch of goodness. "Don't Leave Me Know" comes to us from Spain's Amparanoia with its delicious nighttime grooves. Wagner Pa & Brazuca Matraca (Brazil/Spain) perform "Folia," a minimalist but groove-possessing excursion. From the USA comes the organ-and-guitar-driven "Carmela" by Charanga Cakewalk. Federico Aubele's "Esta Noche" presents its strains of Argentinian-guitar-meets-gorgeous-female-vox grooves. Deepok Chopra, with Adriana Castelazo, gives us an India-Mexico uniting with "In Love with You." Finally, there's Argentina again with "Sentimientos" by Andres Linetzky and Ernesto Romeo, an absorbing strings-based tune. "Latin Lounge" is another fine example of the world's nations getting along in music (if in little else, it sometimes seems). Thanks, Putumayo.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
