STRINGS OF CONSCIOUSNESS - OUR MOON IS FULL (CENTRAL CONTROL)

Experimental, ambient, industrial, shoegazer, more ... Strings of Consciousness just aren't going to be put in any boxes. This collective of talented strings musicians et. al. have offered up here an epic that carries the listener through downtempo industrial with indie rock flourishes, experimental pieces, soft music, noisy music, hints of shoegazer personality at times and just plain old ambience. The scope is broad yet focus is not lost, even if it is a bit loose. But, hey, this is about artistic freedom and exploration. It is about letting artists let their hair down. At least I think so. At any rate, the end result is moody - even a bit softly angry at times. It's thick with atmosphere, regardless of what genres are being flirted with (and that's what this CD does - flirts with genres without actually settling in to a concise category with which the non-adventurous listener can be entirely comfortable). From gentle to aurally crowded, Strings of Consciousness manage to keep a solid personality throughout while not betraying the many faces of its crafting. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
