Pop jazz is almost a misleading title for this collection of jazz numbers that span past to present. Vocal tunes and instrumental pieces alike share the running time on this deliriously delicious salvo of jazz greatness that proves the genres inability to stay neatly between the lines. Jazz is jazz but jazz is everywhere, from muzak to metal. Of course, the extremes aren't where "Pop Jazz Volume One" dwells, though it comes much closer to music with some of the smooth jazz flavor that pops than it is to the metal. The hard stuff isn't what this is all about - though rock and metal have been influenced by jazz in such notable manifestations as Death, Atheist and Psyopus, metal-wise, and King Crimson on the (prog) rock side of things. This album is about grooving to some awesome jazz styles and even getting a music lesson in how jazz ably intertwines in a variety of styles. Funk and soul show up for the party, as do tinges of blues and even a sly hint of reggae. The grooves are heroin-good; one can get a buzz listening to music this spirit-grabbing. A commendable choice of tracks with a view to showing jazz's influence throughout the world of music make "Pop Jazz Volume One" one of 2007's stronger releases. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
