DJ REKHA PRESENTS BASEMENT BHANGRA (KOCH)

It's on Koch Records so I don't know how underground it is, which I assume is what is meant by the "Basement Bhangra" title. Or maybe it's suggesting the cozy little downstairs club where you might hear this, the kind of joint that appeals to those with eclectic tastes. But then again, world-meets-electronica is a convergence growing bigger and bigger in the pop consciousness these days. Whatever the case, "Basement Bhangra" is a stronger entry than some of the "Bhangra" dance CDs I've bumped into. I have an affinity for world music and thus am inclined to like world-injected dance music, but I've heard some whose concept I liked, thus setting me up that much more for the disappointment when the music just doesn't do it. "Basement Bhangra" goes a way toward alleviating some of that. House grooves are the skeleton around which are wrapped the exotic melodies, occasional reggae infusions and a bit of hip-hop attitude. It's a combination that could easily be disastrous but DJ Rekha steers things in the right direction. It's not the pinnacle of world-dance combo music, but it's still a good example. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
