EWAN PEARSON - PIECE WORK (!K7)

It's the very versatility of Ewan Pearson's "Piece Work" that makes it difficult to describe. On one hand, there is the temptation to simply rattle of a genre description for each track, but that somehow seems unfaithful to the spirit of the thing. Its very eclectic nature (though its not an eclecticism that fractures the unity - far from it) is what drives it. But it's a specific sort of eclectic nature. The very diversity of genre references throughout the two discs of "Piece Work" is itself a whole personality, the face that confronts you as you listen to the CD. One cannot readily lump this into any particular section of the techno bin. One could probably recite a litany of different electronic dance genres and end up with what is, technically, a description of what's to be found on the CD. But, again, that's missing the point. Lush, good production, addictive hooks, aurally seductive textures. It's all here. If your electronica needs are very specific (i.e. "I like THIS genre and that's pretty much it") then you ought to think hard before buying this. But if you simply dig electronica you can make grooves with, then here's something thoughtful and compelling. f-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
