PUTUMAYO PRESENTS ZYDECO

Zydeco might surprise you. I think that probably most listenenrs not overly familiar with the genre, other than what you encounter here and there in movies and whatnot, probably have a limited idea of what zydeco is. For example, if you find the stereotpycial zydeco inaccessible, you might want to reconsider and check out Putumayo's "Zydeco" comp. If you like what you've heard of run-of-the-mill zydeco, then you might like to know that there's more to it than just that. Zydeco has all those influences everybody who's ever heard even a snippet of it are familiar with, but there's so much more. Blues and other musical considerations are frequently the bed of nourishing earth for the bright zydeco flavors on this CD. Of course, the spicy accordion Creole sound is the root of all this music, but there's plenty of cultural bleeding going on here. And why not? Creole culture is at the heart of a cultural-blending geographical location. Why not gather some of its richness into your ears with this music? -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
