ARMIN VAN BUUREN - UNIVERSAL RELIGION 2008: LIVE FROM ARMADA AT IBIZA (ULTRA) |
| |

Armin Van Buuren does what he does. Fan of his other stuff translates into fan of this CD, easily. Objectivity and subjectivity find perfect harmony here. I've always respected Van Buuren's style more than I've personally totally digged it. But respect means acknowledgment of talent. Tjhere's no doubting that. Rather than with in-your-face aggressive trance-ations, Van Buuren is more interested in giving listeners the deepness behind the clouds. An ethereal quality resides within this CD, as with all Van Buuren I've heard, yet that etherea is presented with tight, seamless production. If this was a bed in a military barracks, you could bounce a quarter off the top blanket. "Universal Religion 2008" is gorgeous beyond argument yet its hook factor is more subtle. Call me a whore for viscera, but I could have used more gut-impact groove-grab here. Nonetheless, for the fair reviewer, talent overrides taste and to say that Van Buuren is doing something way damn right is beyond contention.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
