DONNA SUMMER - CRAYONS (SONY BMG)

Donna Summers hasn't had an album of new material since 1991. At least that tells us that this isn't a comeback straight from the disco era - not that that would be all bad, or anything. But the point is that Donna Summers fully understands the concept of relevance. This isn't a pathetic attempt at reviving outdated dance styles. Instead, Summers reclaims her standing as a dance floor diva with this party-in-a-small-package. Packed with dance anthems, "Crayons" - a fitting name for reasons I'll explain momentarily - is a high-energy, melodic album of tunes for those inclined toward getting down in the night spots. "Crayons" is an apt name, because there are plenty of audio colors on tap here. Summers draws from R&B, club, house, pop, world and more to craft a commendable career resurrection. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
