CARAVAN OF LIGHT

First, the DVD, "Initiation." It's a short film, taking a variety of artistically done scenes of fire and mingling them with the narration of the fire goddess, warning of the misuse of fire and the penalties thereof. Organic, tribal flavored music accompanies. This project was done in the spirit of world peace and the symbolism of the fire in the context of peace could be explored extensively, I've no doubt. Turn our passions toward good, not bad? Create rather than destroy? I suppose if I was on mushrooms, I would find more transcendent ways of relating, but I think you get the point. Then there's the CD, "Incantation." The rich, organic tribal and world flavors mesh deliciously with the chillout and mid-tempo electronica elements. The CD is the stronger of the two experiences. The DVD is interesting but the CD lacks the pretense of the short film and can be taken with more purity and less rhetoric (if you ignore the liner notes). Not that I have a problem with everybody getting along, it just seems like the folks behind this attach more weight to the project than is really there. Not to denigrate, but this CD isn't going to do much to bring about world peace. What it will do is offer some robust, exotic world flavors updated with electronic spice. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
