PUTUMAYO PRESENTS AFRICAN PARTY (PUTUMAYO) |
| |

The colors are so bright! Putumayo's "African Party" is an ear-dazzling kaleidoscope of musical colors. There's so much perk - without coming off cloying - and a pervading sense of festivity. Which goes a long way to explaining why this is called "African Party" instead of "African Groove" - many of Putumayo's compilations are marked as one ethnic "groove" or another. Now, that isn't to say there aren't any grooves here. Fact is, they're all over the place; "African Party" is packed with hooks, electronic swing and warm, welcoming organics, fulfilling the classic Putumayo aesthetic. But this is such happy, buoyant music, in purified form, with no smarm. It's chock full of verve and joy; it's a very life-affirming CD. It also boasts a distinctive sparkle. Not that most Putumayo discs aren't alive and kicking. But there's a certain shine to this one that warms like a spring sun casting its smile across a happy landscape.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
