ALEX MOULTON - EXODUS (EXPANSION TEAM)

Alex Moulton channels a lot of things in his electronica sci-fi concept album "Exodus." And he's bridging a helluva time gap with his influences, taking in the entire modern world of electronic music. From elevating synths that call to mind the work of Jean Michel-Jarre to cosmic melodies that point to great space music. From sounds reminiscent of Tangerine Dream to trippy danceable sequences that could drive today's dance floors. From ambient to pulsating beats, Moulton has it all. If kitchen sinks made alluring electronic music, there'd be one of those in here too. Which isn't to suggest this is a sprawling, poorly contained conceit. Not so. The music ebbs, flows and grows all across the running time of "Exodus." This is a story told with music, after all, so dramatic and changing music is necessary. But Moulton never lets it get out of his control. All the music here, from the dancefloor stuff to the transcendent, spacebound sections, belongs together, on this disc. Retro sci-fi synths and tomorrow's dance floor join hands across the spectrum of time and space.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
