CLUBBERS GUIDE AMERICA (MINISTRY OF SOUND)

I'm not sure if the fault lies in America's music scene or in the actual ones doing the guiding. Is the music here really representative of the best the U.S. has to offer in club hooks? Or has the Ministry of Sound misfired in trying to represent the dance scene here in the 50? Either way, the results are mixed, with some surges of melodic interest, but too often this compilation falls flat. It's not an absolute failure. The music isn't offputting but too many of the hooks here don't actually hook anything. There's a blandness here that reminds me too much of the shortcomings all too typical of the house genre, though the pop flavors at work here save it from house purgatory. I guess it depends which hurts you more - house purgatory or club purgatory? Or is club a purgatory genre in and of itself? I am not compelled to take a journey into the world of club if this guide isn't a blind guide.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
