If you're not a rap listener, it's easy to develop the attitude that rap is rap. A lot of it sounds the same. I'm not a rap listener, per se, but I've heard enough to be able to say I'm beyond the "rap is rap" attitude. But even a total non-initiate could see how Kottonmouth Kings stand out. In fact, this is one example of rap music that easily finds appeal outside typical rap fans. And it also is readily accessible to those for whom rap is the ultimate musical style. Kottonmouth Kings manage to imbue their music with all the necessary elements for hip-hop - sharp word flow, attitude (though they don't sound like mindless braggadacios, as do many in the field), clever lyrics, hooky beats - but they also inject melodic rock, pop and even acoustic elements into their music. It's truly eclectic but all marching under the banner of Kottonmouth Kings. At times they remind me of some of Kid Rock's material (please, no one on either side of the fence get offended by that, I'll explain). Not that these guys sound like Kid Rock - or vice versa - but the ability to craft, if you take my meaning, "down home" hip-hop flavorings are readily evident. Hints of southern-fried melody mingle with the rap grooves. I'd call it a smattering, but it's more than that. All the pieces that go into this construct are so flawlessly integrated that smattering seems to damn when I mean to praise.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
