MERZBOW/JAMIE SAFT - MERZDUB (CAMINANTE RECORDINGS) |
| |

What a collaboration. Ominously quiet jazz piano inhabits a large empty space as, drifting in like acerbic incense, that space is filled - or perhaps inhabits a parallel universe space - by static. Noise. Atmosphere. And so commences "Merzdub." Yes, you see the word "dub" in there. For the uninitiated, calling this "experimental" may be the nicest comment forthcoming. "Pointless noise" may be a more realistic description to expect. From the uninitiated. In no way am I saying that. I LIKE this. I recognize what's going on here. It is indeed, experimental. Beauty meets beast in a haunting post-industrial, post-apocalyptic, damaged-dub-jazz-tape-found-by-aliens-post-humanity sort of way. The constant is noise. But rarely explosive. When it is assertive, it's in a distant way. The echoes of civilization appear, remnants of distorted voices and skewed snippets of music. One universe ends, another begins. This is the void between destruction and creation. Occasionally, you will hear hints of what a traditionalist will call dub. But if you're looking for some readily accessible dub grooves, you'd best rummage the music store shelves. This is the esoteric for those who know the secret handshake.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
