DANNY HOWELLS - RENAISSANCE THE MIX COLLECTION (RENAISSANCE) |
| |

This is a full feast for lovers of house. I can't say I've evolved to the point of loving house music yet - not as a whole - but my appreciation for it has deepened over time, enough so that I can enjoy a sprawling epic such as this. Two discs, both more than 70 minutes in length, bring forth a heady dousing of the genre. The tempo is somewhat middling, in such a way that the dance hall vibe co-exists with a sort of chill factor as well. Some of that has to do with the music's dovetailing of colorfulness and restraint. It's not minimalist but it's nowhere near crowded either. An atmosphere of warmth welcomes the listener rather than confronting one with juiced-up club anxiety. It's the ideal sort of CD for those afraid they may be pounced upon at any moment by either the need to lounge or the need to dance. Why such a fear would exist, I don't know. But Danny Howells has done his part to alleviate it.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
