"Nervous Nitelife: Vegas" from Starkillers and Austin Leeds is something akin to chain mail across the blackness of space. Though that's not an entirely accurate analogy. It's not clunky like chainmail. It's groove dense and stacked 3-D with textures. It's not minimalist but it allows you to see the spaces between the thick textures. Sort of like chain mail. Thick, but with little spaces all around. And that's a good thing. It's not overwhelmingly dense but it is robust. I like hearing full-bodied and spacey co-existing. "Nervous Nitelife: Vegas" is rooted in big-boned house music but borrows freely from club and electro styles to help create its party-down, acid-laced sound. It's a five-knuckled affair right from the start, a party that doesn't have to build much. It just kicks right off, slamming you in the head. And even if it is a little vapid at times and isn't the most compelling dance CD this year, it's still a slam that feels good.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
