MORGAN PAGE- ELEVATE (NETTWERK)

Morgan Page strikes a balance between club-only electronica and the pop radio variety. This CD would feel quite at home in a dance club and certainly has one foot in the electronica realm, as opposed to mainstream pop that makes ample use of electronica but is more defined by its radio pop quality than its electronica. But that kind of music, of course, has plenty of club presence. I imagine Britney Spears is boomed in the speakers of many a dance venue around the country. But there is a difference in personality between music that is strictly for the electronicaphile and the pop consumer. That gap is bridged on "Elevate," a batch of vocally oriented, melodic dance numbers. The music here is a coin with faces on both sides. Hold it up in the space between a crowd of DJ fanatics and a pile of pop radio listeners and each side will see a friendly face staring at them from the coin. It's difficult to point at any technical aspect that defines such a fusion (or defines the difference I've struggled to illustrate here). It's more a personality thing. And the personas of pop songwriting and the electronic dance niche are merged smoothly here. The one down thing I'll say is that while this is pretty, well-wrought music, it is not a top shelf example of either pop or dance-head music. It's good - very good, even - but no molds are broken. Nonetheless, it is meaty, frequently catchy and sometimes rather sexy.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
