MIDFIELD GENERAL - GENERAL DISARRAY (SKINT)

From vapid but catchy future disco club nonsense to emotion-stirring and atmospheric downtempo, Midfield General has concocted a distinctive dish on "General Disarray," a title that is awfully fitting, considering how all over the map this CD is. But "all over the map" and even the CD's title suggest that there is disarray here. But there is none of that. Eclectic, yes, and if you work in a record store that subdivides its electronica, you're gonna cramp your brain and waste an 8-hour shift deciding where to shelve this. You have that disco bit, a snatch of hooky silliness called "Disco Sirens." And there's the best damn track on the CD, "Teddy Bear," which features actor Ralph Brown narrating the trucker CB tune originally made famous by Red Sorvine. It's a touching tale that reaffirms your faith in man and even dares you not to tear up - and it's set against a dark addiction of big but tenebrous downtempo beats and textures. And what of the strange melding of classic dance burbling beneath in the waters of the electro-touched futuristic "Love Thy Self"? Or "137 Piano," which pulses with a piano hook and gentle bell-like electronic and melodic tinkering but is touched by curious distortion at times and begins with a hip-hop move! Then there's the somewhat minimalist and forward-retro pop meets electronic vibe of "Bass Mechanic." This CD is a convergence of many things. And more! In the end, the listener has experienced so many things he will have to go back again to begin to soak it all up.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
