AFRICAN REGGAE (PUTUMAYO) |
| |

Those who don't listen to much reggae (people like me, for example) can snag an education from this CD. This ten-track spread of grooves brings a delightful variety of colorful, charismatic artists to the fore. "African Reggae" doesn't succumb to homogeny; it avoids being a compilation of indistinguishable examples of a genre that is probably too stereotyped. Each performers' own personality shines, separating every track from the one before. The laid back but perky personality of this CD makes it quite easy to keep your head bobbing along and smiles aren't too far from your face, either. And you don't have to be a fan of the genre. Typically, I'm not a reggae fan - there's little love lost between that genre and my ears. But "African Reggae" is a good primer, an encouragement to give this musical style another shot. It's also another check mark in Putumayo's ongoing string of world music successes.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
