BELOW ZERO - MINUS ONE |
| |

A warm breath of chillout, "Minus 1" is a gift to those who listen to the "Below Zero" radio show. Sadly for me, this is my first exposure to that radio show - but now I know it exists. There's new agey chillout - some of which is quite good but tends toward the generic - and then there's bona fide cool grooves. This is the latter. Featuring 16 different chilled and downtempo artists, this compilation represents the personality of the radio show, and so, in a way, is not just a gift to listeners but an introduction to those who haven't been blessed with exposure to the program. Folks like me. Show creator Mason Rothert said that his intent with the CD was "to create a compilation that sounded like the radio show" - and that thanks to listener demand for a CD of the kind of stuff the program has to offer. Inviting slowed-down beats and nebulas of ambient melodies form like an aurora before the ear's eyes. And as a comp, it works. There's no disconnect from song to song - a common shortcoming of soundtracks - but at the same time, the presence of multiple artists - well-chosen in their mutual context here - allows a distinct personality to seep in from track to track. It offers an evolution of chill from the first cool waft of air to the final frosty breeze.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
