It's odd the way Kaya Project's "And So It Goes" chooses to be eclectic. Because it is and it isn't. (Ambiguity rocks.) See, whole stretches of this laid back disc are not eclectic. The CD finds a flow and sticks with it for a minute, and usually that flow is something exotic, mystic - the kind of eastern flavor you wouldn't be that surprised to find on a chillout CD. But periodically it interrupts that aesthetic for something more earthy, closer to home, but spooky in its own way. Now, for all I know, the tracks I'm interpreting as more nearby our own culture are actually European, for the Cajun/Creole bayou flavors that SEEM to emanate from certain of these interjected tracks certainly have some roots in Europe. But that bluesy flavor is is right around the corner for American listeners. It also gives the music a chance to shift to a slightly more organic tone (though none of the tracks on this disc excommunicate an organic dimension or opt for a totally DJ'd feel - it's a fine balance), slipping into a focus that is more strings, something to complement the downtempo/relaxed mid-tempo beats that appear throughout here. Not that even the more culturally distant flavors don't veer for strings-based touches at times. The combination of what I'm interpreting as French-American blues styles (I could be way off base here) and the exotica of the bulk of the tracks seems askew at first blush, but when you actually hear how an overall third-eye mystic tone can give way to surprising punctuation from that which is more down-home yet cultured and artful.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
