S.C.I. BORG

The only warning I'll give about "S.C.I. Borg" is that you need to come equipped with broad tastes in electronica. S.C.I. Recordings is a diverse label. And this comp of various S.C.I. artists will carry the listener from candy to metaphysical. Oscillator X dollops some sugar with its rave-worthy pop club dance tracks. When Machines Dream takes a more trancey direction - with the kind of melodic bigness you heard more in classic trance days - sometimes with a bit of retro-wave dripped in, but also venturing into psytrance realms - and in one case merging pop and transcendence. Coconut tastes about like you'd expect. Banzai jives to a massive but not oppressive sound that merges sci-fi sensibilities with world music ethnicity. Inspector X is bright and trippy. Smiley launches into the world of happy hardcore and KAW is sunny yet dark. Then we have E-Racer, which boasts a sound that manages to be big, futuristic, retro and a tad industrial, all at once. S.C.I. is a treat for those seeking out indie electronica artists. It's a great sampler revealing what the S.C.I. label has to offer on its diverse roster.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
