SATOSHI TOMIIE - RENAISSANCE THE MASTERS SERIES (RENAISSANCE) |
| |

Satoshi Tomiie's contribution to Renaissance's "Masters Series" is a 2-disc delight for house fans, something I didn't used to be, which you know if you've read reviews 'round these parts for a while. With the likes of Tomiie at work, it's hard to not like house though. Here we find Tomiie embracing a semi-minimalist tone, a direction in house that I like and which I'm sure played no small part in my conversion. This is sleeker than some of the really experimental stuff and definitely has a mainstream dancefloor polish, but it doesn't hinder the atmosphere in the least. Meaty textures constructed from a handful of song elements - well, that's evidence that somebody knows what they're doing. And that's a bit of a low-key compliment for a talent like Tomiie's. When two CDs' worth of house music hold my attention and even leave me ready for more, you know there's a spark of genius at work in the DJ department. Tomiie has picked the best tracks and schlepped them together in just the right way. They could have called this CD set "All The Right Grooves."-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
