KYAU & ALBERT - BEST OF 2002-2009 (EUPHORIC)

This 7-year-spanning best-of disc shows off the up-in-the-clouds melodiousness of Kyau & Albert. Fans of pretty trance can hardly go wrong here, though those seeking a full-out mondo-epic burst may fall just shy of the robust surge they crave (but they won't go away disappointed). "Best Of 2002-2009" is euphoric (suitably enough, given the label) but not quite ecstatic. But hammerblow beats and superbuzz textures likely weren't what these two were going for. This is a sleeker spin on trance, mingling the gentleness of days gone by with the teflon sublimity of like Armind Van Buuren, et al. It's expansive, more about conjuring infinity, exploring spaciousness and air than about being driven and pulsing with a robot-planet sized heartbeat dunked in acid. It's a progressive journey, an understated first half serving as creeper pull for the unexpected hooking-in that happens with the second half's payoff. It's not always about being heavy; it's possible to be epic without being all brawny and musclebound, as demonstrated on this overview of this duo's year's of trance-making. If you want superthump and augmented LSD, this isn't quite the drug you seek. But those desiring to be caressed smoothly but enthusiastically by the sky will wallow ... -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
