"India" is a less cyborg CD than other Putumayo releases. The label's grand motif is typically a balanced fusion of electronic beats with flesh-and-blood instrumentation and vocals. Sometimes, though, these guys downplay the digital angle and provide something a tad more traditional in mien. Such is the case with "India," an album that doesn't lack an electronica element but whose electronica is girded in flesh. A certain laid-back vibe accompanies the laid back groove. It's not chillout but there's no reason you couldn't relax with it. As usual, Putumayo lays out accessible mystique with its friendly exotica, the world of the East - in this case - offered in a mode readily digestible by Western ears, without compromising the cultural integrity of the continent represented by the ten tracks of this latest boundary-blurring endeavor. It's a mellow, warm affair, an aural soothing caress. The CD is being released in conjunction with Putumayo's first book publication, "India: A Cultural Journey."
