PRODIGY "INVADERS MUST DIE" (TAKE ME TO THE HOSPITAL/COOKING VINYL)

With the bad-boy demeanor of rock-n-roll, dance floor grooves, pop accessibility that doesn't undermine the dark electronica glower and plenty of textural acid, The Prodigy make their return after a long, long hiatus. The brains behind "Smack My Bitch Up" have unleashed a whole new album of attitude-laden techno anthems. Heady electronic melodies drip with LSD and come swinging on breakbeat-y hooks, cranking along with subversive snarl couched in radio-friendliness. Catchy samples contribute a vocal element to the instrumental ripsnorting. Beats pump through wrapped in big buzz. What's it all mean? You won't have to twist the listener's arm to give it a second spin. Sneeringly playful, "Invaders Must Day" suggests frivolity but offers substance. Its shadows of the underground creep and muscle their way into mainstream viability. Of course - Prodigy is one of those names that has managed to break out of electronica's stateside niche-dom and into popular consciousness. With work like this, it's no wonder. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
