KRISHNA DAS "HEART FULL OF SOUL" (NOTONE)

The uninitiated might reject this as some froofy-sounding bit of new age pap. They'd be wrong. Just as many so-called hippy-type lifestyles are forever marked with a stigma prompting eye-rolling and worse from those outside the circle - an albatross hanging around the necks of those who choose less-beaten paths by pretentious wannabes and zealots - so much "new age" music is greeted with instant derision. But while there is plenty of "new age" music that probably deserves it, Krishna Das' music does not in the least. Rather, it warrants praise. It might seem repetitive to some, with a handful of chanted lyrics occupying songs that are quite long (there are but 6 songs on each of these two discs if that tells you anything), but that's kind of the point of chanting. It's not monotonous, it's evocative. Krishna Das' yogic chanting and his accompaniment by exotic instrumentation (though nothing unfamiliar to those who enjoy world music) and a number of back-up vocalists merge into a richly melodic, uplifting world of music that will have you singing along too. It did me. And while I do wish there was a lyric sheet included, taking note of the title of each song will help one sing along. It's nice to hear spiritual music that truly does have an element of spiritual rather than cheapy, new age audio enlightenment at a great price.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
