D-BRIDGE & INSTRA:MENTAL PRESENT AUTONOMIC "FABRICLIVE50" (FABRIC) |
| |

Autonomic sets out to redefine a few things. It seems that drum-and-bass has of late become enslaved to the dancefloor groove, making obeisance to the gods of dance. This duo (Autonomic is D-Bridge & Instra:Mental) is kicking convention to the curb and offering an attention-capturing slew of mixed tracks that can best be described as ambient drum-and-bass if they must be described in DnB terms. These drum-and-bassists solicited works from musical associates, etc., with little in the way of genre limitations. All takers were apparently welcome. Autonomic grabbed whatever styles came its way and ran them through an atmospheric and highly textured yet roomy and spacious filter. The music is not a thudding skitter of aggro dance beats. Rather, the grooves are elongated into smooth downtempo-ism. The elongation is not in the positives but the negatives. I.E., it is not the motes of the texture's melody and beats but the spaces between that are given room to expand - and by their expansion, the bits and pieces themselves are awarded space to grow, captivate and hypnotize.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
